Community Programs
CAMP 911 is a safety oriented program geared for children in grades 3-5. It stresses such
safety items as when and how to call 911; emergency services response, bystander care,
bicycle, car and pedestrian safety, safety at home and at school and internet safety. The program is presented by memebers of local police, fire and EMS agencies. Children
have the opportunity to view and touch emergency vehicles and engage in
hands on demonstrations including a "smoke house", fire hose handling, vehicle rollover
demostrations and police K-9 presentations. CAMP 911 is usually held in late June or early July each summer. Priority is given to those campers who have never attended. For more information on CAMP 911, you may call the Police Department. An application for CAMP 911
will be available on line soon.
BICYCLE RODEO: A bicycle rodeo is presented each summer to impress upon bicycle riders of
all ages, the importance of following basic bicycle safety and traffic rules. The Rodeo
is open to all area riders and no application is necessary. In the past, area merchants have co-sponsored the event and have provided prizes and give-aways. Watch for local advertisement or contact the Department for additional information and event date.
As part of our overall bicycle programs, the Department does donate recovered bicycles
that have not been claimed to local children and
adults who otherwise would not have a bicycle available to them for transportation or
recreation purposes.
SENIOR ACADEMY: The Department has present two Senior Academies in the past. The 8
week "Academy" is intended for Senior Citizens and gives those citizens an opportunity
to experience, first hand, the duties and responsibilities of police officers. The
Academy is a series of lectures, tours, hands on demonstrations and "ride-a-longs".
A graduation ceremony completes the program where certificates and commemerative items
are presented to the graduates. This program is driven by citizen interest and is not
a regularly scheduled program.
OPERATION IDENTIFICATION: The Department does have electric engravers available to loan
to residents of the City for the purpose of permanently marking valuables with unique
identification indicators. Telephone the Department to make arrangements.
OPERATION CARE: The Department provides a service to City residents living alone,
who are home bound by health, age or other circumstances, where an officer will check
the citizens on a regular basis to ensure that they are not in need of urgent or
emergency services. The Department will maintain a contact list for these individuals and
will make contacts as necessary. The Department does not provide transportation or
arrand services as part of Operation Care.
